Just got back from seeing Dante, the Synetic Theater's newest endeavor. Was interested in seeing it as have read the Divine Comedy with a stellar Honors class, but... ah... they got somewhat creative with the story. Very creative, actually. As soon as Dante and Beatrice started dancing, I knew it was time to let the details go and just and enjoy the ride.
What a ride. Had seen the Synetic Theater before when they did Macbeth (see clip below), so was ready for the Bay Area-esque take on things, but was really blown away by this one.
Man, I never would have anticipated the pastie-wearing Francesca, or the literal clusterf@$#, or the writhing bodies wrapped in plastic wrap, or the rather sensual Virgil, but you know, within the misty confines of the Rosslyn Spectrum, it all seemed to work. Favorite part by far: when the demon mooned the priest (though will admit that started convulsing in silent laughter, which abruptly ceased when Virgil gave me a look). Most awkward part: right after the mooning, when they shoved the giant cross up the priest's... uh...
Well. This was the first time I had front row center seats to anything, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The choreography was breathtaking, and anyone in their right minds could not help but bow down to the physical prowess of the dancers. Talk about spinal articulation! Woof!
Right. Off to bed! Am going to have crazy dreams tonight.
