I'm in the mood for creating lists, for some reason. Plus, I have 15 minutes to kill before I teach Pilates. Hence, I present my top five songs!!
First up, "These Days." But not any old version: the one by Nico and the Velvet Underground. The one they used in The Royal Tenenbaums. You know how we all have "our songs?" Well, this is my song.
Second, Animal Collective's "My Girls." It's amazing. And joyful. And I adore it.
Coming in third is "Dear Prudence," by the Beatles. I love this song because I had a crazy experience with it when I was 15. I was volunteering on my own in Mexico, and at 2:30 in the morning, as I was walking home with my fellow volunteers, we saw two men in an empty restaurant watching the Beatles sing this song on a black and white TV. It was really surreal. The next day, I swam far out to sea- past where the sea floor drops off, and found myself in the biggest school of fish I'd ever seen. I had that song in my head the whole time. It was awesome.
"Short Skirt / Long Jacket" is my fourth favorite song. The first time I ever heard it, I thought "Huh. I want to be that girl!" and in a really illogical way, the song has kind of guided my behavior for YEARS! Creepy, huh?
Ranked fifth is Jesus Etc. by Wilco. I especially like it with the strings at the start. It's SO beautiful. And simple. And awesome.
Oh, hurrah for music!
